Learn how to personalise your vows and make your wedding day even more special with our expert advice.

Personal Vows are becoming more popular with UK wedding couples. As a wedding videographer, I love them as they add so much to the story telling element of your wedding day.

So here are 5 quick tips for writing personal vows for your wedding ceremony.

1. Start With Your Love Story

Think about how you met, your favourite memories, and the moments that made you realise this person is “the one.” Use these personal touches to craft vows that are unique to your relationship and reflect your journey together.

2. Be True to Yourself

Your vows should sound like you—don’t worry about being overly poetic or formal. Whether you’re humorous, sentimental, or straightforward, write in your voice and say what feels right. Personal vows are an opportunity to express your individuality as a couple.

3. Make Promises for the Future

While it’s great to reflect on the past, your vows are also about your commitment to the future. Focus on the promises you want to make to your partner as you begin this new chapter together. It could be simple, like always making them coffee, or deeper, like supporting each other’s dreams.

4. Keep it Short and Sweet

Your vows don’t need to be long to be meaningful. Aim for a minute or two of heartfelt words—long enough to convey your love, but short enough to keep the moment special and not overwhelming.

5. Practice Out Loud

Reading your vows aloud will help with nerves and emotions on the big day. Rehearse several times so you feel confident. And when it comes to the ceremony, skip reading from your phone—write your vows on nice paper, in a little vow book, or print them out beautifully.
